Alicante vs Benidorm: Which is Better for Families and Groups? (2026)

Forty-five kilometres apart on the Costa Blanca, yet completely different holidays. We live in Alicante city centre and know both destinations well. Here is the honest answer — not "it depends", but a clear guide to which suits families with children, groups of adult friends and couples travelling together.

The Short Answer

What Alicante Actually Feels Like

Alicante is a working Spanish city of 330,000 people that happens to sit on the Mediterranean. It has a medieval castle, a genuine old town with whitewashed streets, a covered market trading since 1921, and a waterfront promenade — the Explanada — lined with palm trees and mosaic tiles. In the evenings, locals eat at 9pm, children play in the squares until midnight in summer, and the terraces fill with a mix of Spanish families and international visitors.

It is not a resort. There are no wristbands or entertainment programmes. What it has instead is the texture of a real city — which is exactly what makes it right for the traveller who wants more than a pool and a sunbed.

What Benidorm Actually Feels Like

Benidorm is something else entirely — and it makes no apology for it. The skyline is a row of 30-storey hotel towers on a narrow strip between two spectacular beaches. Everything is designed for holiday convenience: all-inclusive hotels, water parks, theme parks, British pubs and a nightlife strip running until dawn. It is efficiently built for mass tourism and does that job very well.

The beaches — Levante and Poniente — are genuinely excellent: long, wide, clean and very well serviced. If the beach and the hotel pool are the core of your holiday, Benidorm delivers.

Head-to-Head Comparison

For Families with Children

Both cities work for families, but differently. Benidorm's appeal is obvious: Terra Mítica theme park, Aqualandia water park and hotel pools that entertain children without leaving the resort. If theme parks are the priority for your children (roughly ages 5–14), Benidorm is efficient.

Alicante works better for families who want variety across a longer stay. The castle is free, genuinely impressive and accessible by lift — children love it. Tabarca Island is one of the best child-friendly day trips in Spain: the boat journey, snorkelling in crystal-clear water, small island streets to explore. The TRAM to San Juan beach is an adventure in itself for younger children. And because you are based in a real city, every evening is different.

For stays of 5 nights or more, Alicante holds attention better. Benidorm can feel repetitive by day three if the beach and pool are the only options.

For Groups of Adult Friends

This is where Alicante wins clearly. A group of 4–8 adults who want good food, genuine Spanish atmosphere and evenings that feel like a real night out — Alicante is the right choice.

Renting a large private apartment in the city centre costs significantly less per person than booking multiple hotel rooms in either city, and gives you the freedom of a shared kitchen, living room and your own schedule. The old town restaurants, the port area, the Explanada at sunset — these are the evenings that groups remember.

Benidorm's all-inclusive model works against discerning adult travellers. The food is designed for volume, not quality. The atmosphere skews young and high-energy. It is excellent for what it is — but what it is does not match the profile of most adult groups looking for a quality break in Spain.

Can You Do Both?

Yes, easily. From a base in Alicante, a day trip to Benidorm is straightforward — 45 minutes by car or just over an hour by ALSA bus from Alicante bus station, which is 15 minutes walk from our apartment. You can spend a day on Levante beach, visit Aqualandia if you have children, and be back in Alicante for dinner in the old town.

This is the ideal combination for many families and groups: the quality, culture and variety of Alicante as your base, with Benidorm available as a one-day option. The reverse — basing yourself in Benidorm and day-tripping to Alicante — works less well because Alicante deserves more than a rushed half-day.

The Honest Verdict

Benidorm is very good at being Benidorm. If you want a high-energy beach resort with all-inclusive hotels, water parks and a buzzing nightlife strip, it delivers that better than almost anywhere in Europe.

But if you are a family who wants more than a hotel pool, a group of adults who care about food and real atmosphere, or anyone staying 4+ nights who wants a holiday with genuine variety — Alicante is the better choice. It is a real Spanish city with a real beach, and that combination is rare on the Costa Blanca.

The fact that you can do a Benidorm day trip from Alicante — but not easily the reverse — makes Alicante the stronger base for most travellers reading this.
